I’ve read several of this author’s books, and although she’s a fine writer the one thing that keeps me from thinking of her as a favorite is that her Lizzy is always a horrible person.This book is no different. It’s enjoyable ... except for Lizzy. The original Elizabeth Bennet had her flaws, for certain, not the least of which was her pride in judging people’s characters and refusing to listen to anyone (Jane, Charlotte) whose opinions didn’t match her own. But she was admirable in recognizing her mistakes, and after the infamous proposal, taking a more measured and reasonable view of Darcy. Even when she assumes that he’s withdrawn his attentions after Lydia’s folly, she doesn’t think badly of him for it.And then there’s the Lizzy of this book, who never learns anything. Who holds grudges even after everyone affected (Jane) has told her she is happy how things worked out. Who is not willing to think well of Darcy if any of his flaws at all come before her, but who will erupt with anger and accusations again and again, even after she accepted him as a friend. One mistake on his part and she tosses him away.Some friend she is.And that’s the crux of my issue with each of this author’s books. Lizzy is so unwilling to compromise or give an inch, she’s unwilling to listen, and despite her love for her family, she’s a pretty terrible sister and friend. She never considers anyone else but her own feelings and her own sense of right — what she thinks is right — and doesn’t forgive or learn or grow. Oh, she always regrets what she says and wishes to apologize, but usually it’s Darcy who has to make all of the changes and this book is no different. This Lizzy isn’t admirable. She’s terrible and spiteful, and with a selfish disdain for the feelings of others. Honestly, she needs Darcy to reject her to learn a lesson, but he never does, and she somehow gets her happy ending anyway — not because she’s that good or admirable but because Darcy is. Darcy loves Lizzy, but she takes forever to see anything good in him. Great Darcy effort in this novel. Lots to like. Jane and Richard are together in this one, and do some helping along the way... Everyone can see what Lizzy can't. A good read.
